Translation memory systems and CAT (computer-aided translation) tools have become an integral part of today\u2019s translation processes. A translation memory is a digital database that stores all translation units as language pairs. This requires the text to be in electronic form, which is then imported into the translation memory system.<\/p>\n

The source text is divided into segments, usually consisting of sentences ending with a full stop, exclamation mark, or question mark. Initially, the translation memory is empty, so all segments need to be translated and confirmed. During this process, the translated segments of the target language are paired with the source language segments, making them immediately available for future translations.<\/p>\n

For subsequent translations, the new text is compared “sentence by sentence” with the translation units stored in the system. This allows translations to be reused when a similar or identical segment is translated.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
